With a population of only 1,100 to 1,600 individuals, the Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world! This species is endemic to Hawaii, with the majority of their population found in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and only 400 on the main islands. Since the 1950’s, their population numbers have been declining. However, each year between 2013 and 2021, their population has grown 2 percent, and along with promising increases in juvenile survival enhancement research, their future is becoming brighter!
