Did you know loons are fiercely territorial? In fact, Common Loons can fight to the death over territories and mates. This image was taken after an altercation between a lone loon and an established pair. Although it didn’t escalate to that extreme, it was fascinating to watch the interaction. The loons circled each other before diving underwater. All I could see were bubbles rising to the surface, hinting at their location—but it wasn’t always foolproof. Sometimes they would surface far away, and other times, startlingly close. In this image, the lone loon gave me this shocked look as he appeared directly to the right side of my kayak.
