"Golden Guardian" Hawaiian Goose Lustre Paper Wall Art From Princeville, Hawaii
The Hawaiian Goose, also known as the Nene, was designated as the Territory of Hawaii’s official bird in 1957 and as the Hawaii State Bird in 1959. This bird is mentioned as the guardian of the land in the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant! They were also hunted by ancient Hawaiians for food and its feathers which they used in kahili, a traditional symbol.
They are endemic to Hawaii and were federally listed as endangered in 1967 after nearly going extinct in the wild due to hunting, introduced predators, and habitat loss. However in 2019 they were downlisted because of successful recovery efforts, including the reintroduction of captive bred individuals.
