This was definitely a morning that will go down in the books for me. It started just like any other I had spent with the loons. I arrived 30 minutes before sunrise, carried my gear down a dirt road, set up my kayak, and hit the water. It was a calm and clear morning, and after a few minutes, fog slowly began creeping over the mountains. Before long, it had completely engulfed the pond.

At one point, all I could see was the loon parent and chick as they rested in the center of the pond. I waited patiently until the fog thinned enough to see the shoreline and it also just happened to be when the chick decided it was nap time.

Every spring, Vermont gets a ton of wonderful species that migrate through the state including these beautifully colored warblers. One of my favorite visitors for the past 2 years has been the yellow warblers, which are fairly consistent in one location nearby. The first year, I managed to capture shots from a distance but couldn’t capture an ideal close-up. Luckily, in 2023, I finally had my encounter with an individual as it rested on an invasive honeysuckle plant.

Moss Glen Falls, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Vermont during the peak fall foliage. This image required entering the freezing cold water and taking long exposures giving fantasy-like results.

For the longest time, I’d been trying to capture a clean, vibrant green background of my local barred owl, Ricky Bobby. But because I first found him during Vermont’s infamous “stick season,” most of the trees were bare, and the evergreen needles alone never gave me the look I wanted.

Weeks later, I followed him to a more open field that finally had the backdrop I’d imagined, but the light wasn’t right. A few weeks after that, everything aligned. After tracking him for several hours, he settled on a perfect perch and stayed long enough for the sunset to work its magic, illuminating the newly budding trees and casting a warm yellow glow through the dark evergreen needles.
